3-Tab vs Architectural Shingles: Which Is Right for North Texas?

    What Each Shingle Actually Is

3-tab shingles are flat, single-layer asphalt shingles with three even cutouts that create a uniform pattern. They're the original asphalt shingle — cheap, light, and fast to install. Architectural shingles (also called dimensional or laminate shingles) are made from two layers of asphalt fused together, creating a thicker profile with a varied, shadowed look that mimics wood shake.

Why Wind Matters in North Texas

DFW regularly sees straight-line winds in the 60 to 80 mph range during spring storms. A 60-mph rated 3-tab is right at its limit on a normal storm and well past it on a strong one. Architectural shingles at 110+ mph have a real margin of safety. After every major storm we tear off rows of lifted 3-tabs from older Plano and Richardson roofs.

    When 3-Tab Still Makes Sense

    • Short-term flips where the roof just needs to pass inspection.
    • Budget rentals where every dollar counts.
    • Outbuildings, sheds, and detached garages where appearance is secondary.

    Our Recommendation

For an owner-occupied North Texas home you'll keep 5+ years, install architectural — and seriously consider Class 4 impact-rated like Malarkey Vista or CertainTeed Belmont. The math works.
