What Is Drip Edge — and Why Every Texas Roof Needs It

    What Drip Edge Does

Drip edge is the L-shaped metal strip you see tucked under the first row of shingles along a roof's edge. Its job is simple but critical: when water runs off the shingles, it has a defined path off the roof and into the gutter — instead of curling back under the shingles, against the fascia, or behind the gutter where it can rot wood it's not supposed to touch.

    Where It Goes

    • Eaves (the horizontal edge above the gutter) — drip edge goes under the underlayment.
    • Rakes (the sloped edge along the gable end) — drip edge goes over the underlayment.

That sequencing matters. Installed in the wrong order, water can sneak underneath. We see this all the time on older roofs and on cut-rate jobs.

    What Happens Without It

Without drip edge, every rainstorm sends water curling back along the underside of the shingle and onto the fascia and decking. Over months and years, the wood absorbs water, rots, and starts to fail. You'll notice peeling paint on the fascia, sagging gutters, and eventually soffit damage. Catching it requires a full edge rebuild — much more expensive than just installing drip edge correctly the first time.

    Texas Code Requirements

The 2018 International Residential Code (R905.2.8.5) requires drip edge at all eaves and rakes on asphalt shingle roofs. Most North Texas cities — Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Farmersville, Princeton, and others — have adopted this code or a newer version. A roof installed without drip edge will fail inspection and isn't legal.

If Your Roof Doesn't Have It

Roofs installed before the code change often don't have drip edge. We can usually retrofit it without a full roof replacement — typically $300 to $700 depending on the roof's perimeter. If you're already planning a roof replacement, drip edge will be included as part of any reputable bid.
