Ventilation is simply the process of supplying a continuous supply of air through the attic space.

To have proper ventilation, ventilation must be specifically calculated based on the attic space square footage and correctly installed. Proper ventilation consists of 50% intake ventilation placed near the lower part of the attic space, and 50% exhaust ventilation placed near or at the roof peak. The exhaust ventilation should be at least three feet higher than the intake ventilation.

While proper, balanced roof ventilation is one the best returns on investment for protecting the longevity of your house, about 90% of homes do not have it.

Proper ventilation conserves energy by removing superheated air from the attic that can reach temperatures between 140 and 150 degrees. The superheated air not only speeds up the deterioration of paint, roofing, and insulation, it penetrates down through the ceiling to heat the entire living area.

Getting that superheated air out of the attic makes it so your air conditioning units don’t have to work as long or as hard. Cooling bills will be lower, and the cooling system will last longer. During winter months, attic ventilation is equally important to reduce attic condensation. If insulation in an improperly ventilated attic becomes wet from moisture it becomes useless. This allows heat to escape through the attic and allows your attic to become a breeding place for black mold. Proper ventilation is important throughout the year.

And lastly, if the attic ventilation is not to roofing code as stipulated by shingle manufacturers, there could very well be no manufacturer's warranty on the roof that you just installed.
